You’ll notice, dear reader, that I wasn’t always as decrepit as you find me nowadays.
Fifty years ago, in Melbourne in our family home a Bahá’í teacher endeavoured unsuccessfully to teach my dear deceased parents the Faith. Imagine the astonishment a generation later when by coincidence as an unexpected seeker I darkened his threshold.
Six years later in the heyday of my life I pioneered for 53 weeks in Upper Silesia. Shortly after that 1995 interlude of ‘Cross Border Teaching’ into a dozen countries of Eastern Europe, old and new Cathay beckoned and nigh on a decade held me rapt - from Guangzhou to Huhehot and west of Xian, and into a dozen Chinese cities on the east coast – until, from her shores I plucked a most beautiful rose.
In the immediate wake of our two years’ voluntary service as resident custodians of the Sydney Bahá’í Centre, Velanta (Chen Mo Chen) and I home-front pioneered for three years in Whyalla ‘where the outback meets the sea’ before our arrival here in Adelaide near the end of 2011. Two very happy and healthy ‘children of the Kingdom’, Eddie aged eight and Amin who is two, are God’s greatest gifts to our union of east and west. Failing to mention my several months’ sojourn fifteen years ago in Holdfast Bay and Marion (Adelaide) or the exemplary assistance provided by South Australia’s Bahá’ís on the occasion of the World Congress of Esperanto would be remiss of me. (*pp76-82) No less an authority than the Universal House of Justice has noticed with appreciation that help, as recorded for posterity by yours truly in the two-dollar online book cited below: "It is clear that the Bahá’ís participating in this event were most effective in taking advantage of the opportunities it provided for the proclamation of the Faith" 20-10-1997 UHJ (*p80)
Assuming momentarily that I shun self-aggrandizement why compose these many lines above? True consultation is not easy, for, by definition, we aim to change the status quo when we speak. My record of service appears here as evidence of my preparedness to obey our most blessed institution. To propose a change of course therein on the part of its nine leaders as individuals, as a possible cure to the crisis in declarations facing this generation of Bahá’ís, is no affront to its institutional authority.
